A sitemap must be XML with the sitemaps.org namespace, list full URLs on the same site, hold at most 50,000 URLs and 50 MB, and use W3C dates in <lastmod>.
Keep it clean
List only pages you want in Google, that load with status 200 and aren't redirected or noindexed.
Questions
Where should my sitemap be?
Usually at /sitemap.xml. Add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.
Does it read gzipped sitemaps?
Not yet. This free check reads plain XML only.
