A strategy is the thinking; a social media marketing plan is the doing. The plan is what turns ‘we should grow on social’ into a concrete document anyone on the team can follow — who posts what, where, when, and why. If you’ve already nailed your social media strategy, this is how you make it real. Here’s a step-by-step template.
Step 1: Write down your goals
Start with one or two clear, measurable goals tied to the business — ‘grow qualified leads from social by 25% this quarter,’ not ‘get more followers.’ Specific goals are what let you tell, at the end, whether the plan worked.
Step 2: Define your audience
Capture who you’re reaching — their problems, the platforms they use, the language they respond to. Everything downstream (channels, content, tone) flows from this, so don’t skip it.
Step 3: Choose your channels
Pick the one or two platforms where your audience actually is and that you can sustainably feed. For each, note your goal, your main format, and your posting cadence. Resist the urge to be everywhere.
Step 4: Set your content pillars and formats
- 3–5 content pillars (educate, engage, prove, sell, entertain)
- A few repeatable formats per pillar
- An 80% value / 20% promotion balance
- Notes on tone and brand voice
Those last two — tone and voice — are easier to keep consistent when they’re written down once; our social media branding guide covers locking in a look and voice the whole team can follow.

Step 5: Decide your cadence and calendar
Choose how often you’ll post per channel — something you can hold for 90 days — and put it into a content calendar. The calendar is where the plan becomes a schedule. Slot posts into their best times while you’re at it.
Step 6: Assign roles and a workflow
Even a team of one benefits from a clear workflow: who creates, who approves, who schedules, who engages. Write down the steps a post takes from idea to live. This is what keeps a plan from quietly falling apart the moment things get busy.
Step 7: Set a budget
List what the plan costs — tools, any ad spend, content creation, people’s time. You don’t need a big budget, but you need an honest one, because it’s half of the ROI equation you’ll measure later. If ads are part of the mix, our social media advertising guide helps you size that line item sensibly.
Step 8: Decide how you’ll measure success
Name the metrics that map to your goals and commit to a monthly review. Without this step, a plan is just hope on paper. Pair it with the framework in social media analytics.
A strategy you don’t turn into a dated, owned, measurable plan is just a nice idea. The plan is where it gets real.
Put the plan to work
Your finished plan should fit on a page or two: goals, audience, channels, pillars, cadence, workflow, budget, and metrics. Then run it for a quarter and review. The teams that win don’t have fancier plans — they have plans they actually follow, supported by a setup where planning, publishing and measuring all live in one place.
